Symptoms
Patients with a slip disc usually describe:
- Deep back pain that worsens on bending, coughing or sneezing
- An ache travelling from the hip through the thigh and calf into the foot, usually on one side
- Tingling, numbness or burning in the leg or foot
- Pain that increases after sitting or standing for long
- Sharp pain on raising the straight leg while lying down
Weakness in both legs, loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness in the inner thighs are emergency signs. Go to a hospital without delay.
How treatment works at Arogyam
Before treatment we review your MRI or X-ray report, the path the pain takes and which activities aggravate it. That determines which practices are safe for you.
Electro-acupuncture
Needles are placed at selected points in the back and leg and carry a very mild electrical current. As tightness and swelling around the nerve reduce, the radiating ache eases.
Selected yoga practice
Forward-bending postures can aggravate a slip disc and are avoided. In their place we teach gentle back-supporting work, activation of the abdominal and hip muscles, and breathing practice.
Daily precautions
How you lift, how long you sit, and your mattress and sleeping posture — small changes here substantially reduce recurrence.
Nutrition and weight
Extra body weight loads the lumbar discs directly. Where relevant, a gradual weight-management plan is given.
