Symptoms
Sciatica is recognised by the path the pain takes:
- An ache starting in the back or hip and running down the back of the thigh, calf and foot
- Usually in one leg only
- Pain that worsens on sitting, especially on a hard surface
- A jolt down the leg when coughing or sneezing
- Tingling, numbness or burning in the leg or foot
- Occasionally weakness lifting the foot
Weakness in both legs, numbness in the inner thighs, or loss of bladder or bowel control is an emergency — go to a hospital immediately.
How treatment works at Arogyam
The first question is where the nerve is being compressed — in the spine (slip disc) or by the hip muscle. The treatment differs accordingly, and that distinction decides the outcome.
Electro-acupuncture
Points are selected along the back, hip and the path of the leg, with a very mild electrical current through the needles to reduce spasm and swelling along the nerve.
Acupressure
Pressure on the deep hip muscles, particularly where piriformis tightness is the cause.
Yoga therapy
Carefully selected work for the hip and hamstrings. Where the sciatica comes from a slip disc, forward-bending postures are avoided.
Sitting habits
A wallet in the back pocket, a very soft sofa, and hours in one position all aggravate sciatica. Changing them is part of the treatment.
